Why Storm Windows Are Worth Fixing
A working storm window adds a second layer of glass and a pocket of still air in front of your main window. On an older single-pane window, that can make a dramatic difference to drafts and comfort.
Storm windows also shield the main window from rain, snow and sun — which is why so many old wood windows behind storms are in surprisingly good shape. When the storm fails, that protection is gone.
The common problems are simple: cracked or broken storm glass, torn screen inserts, aluminum tracks bent or packed with dirt so the panels won't slide, broken latches and pins, and weep holes at the bottom blocked so water collects. All of these are repairable, usually in one visit.

Cracked or broken storm glass
The insulating air pocket is gone and water gets in.
Panels stuck in the tracks
Bent tracks or dirt stop the panels from sliding.
Torn screen insert
Bugs get in whenever the storm is open.
Water pooling at the bottom
Blocked weep holes trap water against the main sill.
- Tracks — the storm frame has separate tracks for each panel. Dirt and bent tracks make panels stick.
- Upper glass panel — usually fixed or sliding at the top.
- Lower panel — slides up and down — swap glass for screen in summer.
- Weep holes — small openings at the bottom that let water drain. Blocked holes trap water against your main window's sill.
Clear the weep holes every fall — it prevents most storm-window damage.
