Where Door Frames Rot First
Doors rot in predictable places: the bottom of the door itself, the bottom few inches of the jambs, and the brick mold trim where it meets the step or the ground.
These spots take splashback from rain, sit in snow and meltwater, and often lose their paint first. Once water gets into the end grain, rot spreads upward from the bottom — but it usually stays in the lower portion, which is why a repair makes more sense than a new door or frame.
We cut out the rotted wood, splice in matched wood shaped to the original profile, and prime and paint it to blend. It's the same work we do every day on window sills and sashes.

- Brick mold ends — the exterior trim sits on or near the stoop, where water collects.
- Bottom of a wood door — once paint wears off the bottom edge, water soaks into the end grain.
- Threshold joint — water can sit where the frame meets the sill and seep into the wood.
Rot usually stays in these lower zones — which is why a door frame can be rebuilt instead of replaced.
