Door Glass Is Safety Glass — and Must Be Replaced That Way
Glass in and next to doors is required by building code to be tempered safety glass, which breaks into small blunt pieces instead of sharp shards. Replacement glass has to meet the same standard.
We replace clear, frosted and low-E glass in entry doors, French doors, sidelites and storm doors — single-pane or insulated double-pane. Insulated door glass can fog when its seal fails, just like a window, and the fix is the same: a new sealed unit in the existing door.
For leaded, beveled or art-glass door inserts that need conservation-grade work, we'll refer you to a specialist.
We replace front door glass and other entry door glass, individual French door glass panes, sidelites and storm door glass. Some doors use a factory door glass insert — the glass and its frame as one unit — and we'll tell you from a photo whether the glass or the whole insert needs replacing.

A new entry or French door, installed and finished, costs far more than replacing its glass. Replacing just the glass keeps the door, its hardware and its paint or stain exactly as they are.

Broken Door Glass: What to Do First
Safe to do yourself
- Tape a cracked pane on both sides with clear packing tape.
- Cover a broken door pane with plywood from the outside until it's repaired.
- Photograph the whole door and measure the visible glass.
- Look for the small etched stamp that shows the glass is tempered.
Call a pro
- Cutting or installing tempered glass yourself — it must be made to size.
- Removing door glass frames on steel or fiberglass doors.
- Leaded or decorative art-glass inserts.
- Anything involving the lock or hinges — outside our scope, and a locksmith job.
