Common Aluminum Window Problems
Aluminum frames are nearly indestructible. What fails are the small parts that make them work — and those are replaceable.
Aluminum sliders and single-hungs were standard on many homes built from the 1950s through the 1970s, and aluminum storm windows are still common on older houses across the county. After decades of use, rollers wear flat, tracks bend or fill with grit, latches break, and the felt or vinyl weatherstripping crumbles.
Because aluminum conducts cold, these windows can also show heavy condensation and frost in winter. Good weatherstripping and working storm windows make a real difference.
Aluminum sliding windows depend on small window rollers in the bottom track and an aluminum window latch that pulls the panels tight. When either wears out, the window drags, rattles or won't lock — and both are inexpensive parts to replace.
