Why Brick Mold Rots
Brick mold (brick molding) is the wood trim that frames a window or door where it meets the brick. It covers the gap between the window frame and the masonry — and because it sits right in the weather, it's one of the first places a window rots.
Rain runs down the brick and the glass and collects where the brick mold meets the sill. When the caulk joint between the brick and the mold cracks, or the paint wears thin, water soaks into the end grain at the bottom corners.
The wood swells, the paint peels, and the corners go soft — often spreading into the jamb behind it if it isn't caught.
We cut out the rotted sections and splice in matched wood shaped to the existing profile, or replace a whole length of brick mold when most of it is gone. Then we prime, paint and reseal the joint to the brick so water sheds again.
