Basement windows are small, low and easy to ignore — until one lets in water, cold air or an intruder.
Most are hopper windows (hinged at the bottom, opening inward) or small sliders. Because they sit at or below grade, their wood frames and sills stay damp and rot, their glass gets hit by lawn equipment and stones, and their latches corrode and stop locking.
